Attachment Injuries

What are attachment injuries?

Attachment injuries occur when there is a significant rupture in a close relationship, often involving a deep sense of betrayal, abandonment, or unmet emotional needs.  These injuries can occur in both childhood and adulthood, affecting our ability to form secure connections.  Common attachment injuries may arise from neglect, infidelity, emotional unavailability, or unresolved conflict.  When these wounds are not healed, they can create emotional barriers, distrust, and insecurity in current and future relationships.

The Impact of Attachment Injuries

Attachment injuries can have lasting effects on mental health and relationships.  Those who have experienced these injuries may struggle with feelings of rejection, worthlessness, and emotional disconnection.  In some cases, unresolved attachment wounds can lead to anxiety, depression, or difficulties in forming healthy, trusting bonds with others.  Individuals often find themselves repeating negative patterns in relationships, despite a strong desire for closeness and security.

How Therapy Can Help Heal Attachment Injuries

At Oakridge Counseling Center, we use attachment-based therapies, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), to address and heal attachment injuries.  EFT is designed to help individuals and couples identify and understand the underlying emotions that contribute to relational distress.  By working through these emotions, clients can rebuild trust, enhance emotional connection, and develop secure, supportive relationships.

In therapy, we focus on creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can explore their past wounds and process difficult feelings.  Through this process, clients begin to recognize and change negative relationship patterns, learning how to create secure attachments with loved ones.

Who Can Benefit From Attachment Therapy?

Attachment therapy is beneficial for individuals and couples who have experienced emotional wounds in their relationships, whether from childhood or adulthood.  It can help anyone struggling with trust, intimacy, or ongoing conflict in relationships.  Whether you're seeking to heal from past traumas or strengthen your current relationships, attachment-focused therapy can be an important step in fostering deeper, more meaningful connections.
